Evaluation and Reflection

Evaluation and Reflection:

1) Visual Communication:

In what ways does the visual communication/message of the piece meet the needs of the brief?
Like on y first book cover I ended up doing a silhouette monument from Greek to give the message as the title was giving and also giving the match colours for the image.

For the second book cover I used natural colours matching the photograph.
What are the strengths of the visual communication? Why?

I think I made it clear using the right typography for the book title as the publisher and image given.

What are the weaknesses of the visual communication? Why?

Maybe if I used a smaller font of a darker colour that audience would not understand the message.

In what ways could the piece be mis-read or mis-understood by the audience? Be specific about who the audience is.

For some reason it could mis understood from the illustration image on book cover 1 if it didnt have a clear tittle.

Like people from who are interested in history like adults, teachers or students.

In what practical ways could the piece be developed or improved?

2) Reflection of own working practices:

Be very honest with yourself in this section. Please feel free to approach a member of staff for help finding ways to develop skills.

How was my time keeping?

My time was a bit tight trying my best to have a lot of research.

How was my analysis of the brief?

I had ideas on my head keeping with my research going back and forward.

How was my research?

It was pretty good and interesting to know every position and changes from penguin books.

How did I draw conclusions from my research?

Done initial ideas, research going through them and take on mind to do something similar but different.

How did I use research to generate and develop ideas?

To make notes and guide myself straight to the point to design.

How did I use evaluations to help with my ideas generation and development?

From my research and my design developments.

How did I use experimentation during the project? How can I make this more effective?

When I finished my first I printed out to make sure it was right since we had a short time brief, on my second cover book I did have a problem with the measurement because when I tried it on the book it was a bit shorter at the back cover side so I think I should of make a bleed on my cover book design so I could have more space and cut around the original book!

In what ways did I show that I had achieved the Learning Outcomes? How can I improve this next time?

I have come up with straight research for a shorter time but for the next time I would like to improve on my printing measurements. Though I had all right but for the last day to print out my second cover design it went a bit wrong on the printing size book.

What parts of the project did I enjoy most? Why was this the case?

I have enjoy the research and guess I took time in there getting ideas and developing my work.

What parts of the project did I enjoy least? Why was this the case?.

From my printing day I think from my second cover experience I felt a bit disappointed with the size.

At what times did I work best? Why might this be the case? How can I ensure that I work well at al times?

Development my work going through each step and guidance to ensure I have it right.

What areas inspired me? Why was this the case? How could I follow these up?

Coming with lots of ideas on research it followed me to do some initial ideas and to star developing my own work to see the outcome.

What areas were challenging or difficult? Why was this the case?

I think on the measurements even though it came right but guess if I added a bleed to my cover book design I would not have this printing problem.

How can I go about developing and improving the parts I found difficult?

Maybe because we had a short brief I could not show one of my teachers to check the preview print but now I understand that I should always make an extra bleed for my work in case I did not have the right size.

Do I need to develop certain skills? Do I need these now? Or later?

I think I will need to improve on my printing skills.

For my final cover book I wanted to use my own photograph in a central line giving the space for the tittle and the publisher.

Using a green background and brown spine colour, I used the green background so it will stand out with the title book of “nature” so for then I used a green background colour to add my own photograph in the middle of the book cover cropped in half to give a middle position.

For it’s title this book Genre reflects of historical biographies or travel because you would like to explore and get to know the history of “The nature history of Britain and Ireland” such as the audience could be adults and students who likes to explore the nature or photography.

I also add the penguin logo on the spine along the tittle and publisher name to be recognize.

At the back cover book I have used a white colour font for the blurb on the left side giving the side space areas using the rulers from InDesign.

I left a blank non image at the back cover so I only used the blurb and the information pages, bar code, price and a small square containing the information in there.

For my final development second cover book I used green, white and brown colour because from the title it’s about “natural” history of Britain and Ireland so I wanted to use the green for natural. I placed the title in the middle using font “Apple Chancery”the same as the publisher name located on the right hand side.

I have added rules for each section to be in one side and adding the photograph in the middle of the tittle and publisher name to give a space.

For the spine I have done the same as the earlier cover book 1 but in a different position using the tittle book first and the publisher name at the bottom along the penguin logo.

At the back cover book I used the white “Halvetica” font for the blurb with the information paper, bar code and price.

These are my second initial ideas for my second book cover and have come with the idea of using my own photograph on a cover book.

This is my final book cover using a light brownish background with a darker spine and yellowish white font including with the silhouette illustration.

From my research I have come up with several ideas and was more inspired by the silhouette and illustration images but for finally I have come with the silhouette monument illustrated from a photograph that I placed from the internet.

I choose that to put this illustration in the middle of the front cover to look mysterious and stand out.

For the author’s name I placed on the right side below the illustration to give an interact position, like in some other books they have in different positions such in the middle or at the top of the book.

Reflecting from the title book I used an illustration monument Greek where I have also included a combination background colour and font for the Genre book called as “Historical biographies” because as the title says it’s a legend and the audience should be for people who are learning from other cultures such as teachers, students and adults.

On the spine I have put the publisher name in a horizontal line and the title book on a vertical line to have the space to read along with the penguin logo at the bottom.

I did not use any other image at the back because I think it would look messy so I wanted to have it simple and clean.

Product Dimensions: measure own mock-up book

From my research I have looked up the measurement, colour, font, images, illustration, texture of book covers where are positioned.

I had to take the measurement from a original book which am going to be using for the book cover design and here are the measurement for the front and back, width cover its 110mm and for the front and back cover height it’s 180mm and for the spine width it’s 30.2mm.

To get the right width for InDesign I add the front and back cover width and the wide spine and came out 252mm and high normally stays how it is as 180mm.

To start I have add guide lines to get the spine line in the middle of the book cover.

For the penguin logo I had to photoshop to get rid of the white background so I could add it to the spine.

Having the layout for the cover design I have include the guide lines for each section to have an accurate position.

I use kinda light brown and darker brown for the spine because this colours are reminded from the Greek history like brown, white, yellow black and orange so from them I used these colours adding a illustrated photograph on Illustrator by only adding the “silhouette illustration monument” to look mysterious.

The title font is “Roman” found in and back cover blurb it’s”Halvetica”
