Evaluation and Reflection

Evaluation and Reflection:

1) Visual Communication:

In what ways does the visual communication/message of the piece meet the needs of the brief?
Like on y first book cover I ended up doing a silhouette monument from Greek to give the message as the title was giving and also giving the match colours for the image.

For the second book cover I used natural colours matching the photograph.
What are the strengths of the visual communication? Why?

I think I made it clear using the right typography for the book title as the publisher and image given.

What are the weaknesses of the visual communication? Why?

Maybe if I used a smaller font of a darker colour that audience would not understand the message.

In what ways could the piece be mis-read or mis-understood by the audience? Be specific about who the audience is.

For some reason it could mis understood from the illustration image on book cover 1 if it didnt have a clear tittle.

Like people from who are interested in history like adults, teachers or students.

In what practical ways could the piece be developed or improved?

2) Reflection of own working practices:

Be very honest with yourself in this section. Please feel free to approach a member of staff for help finding ways to develop skills.

How was my time keeping?

My time was a bit tight trying my best to have a lot of research.

How was my analysis of the brief?

I had ideas on my head keeping with my research going back and forward.

How was my research?

It was pretty good and interesting to know every position and changes from penguin books.

How did I draw conclusions from my research?

Done initial ideas, research going through them and take on mind to do something similar but different.

How did I use research to generate and develop ideas?

To make notes and guide myself straight to the point to design.

How did I use evaluations to help with my ideas generation and development?

From my research and my design developments.

How did I use experimentation during the project? How can I make this more effective?

When I finished my first I printed out to make sure it was right since we had a short time brief, on my second cover book I did have a problem with the measurement because when I tried it on the book it was a bit shorter at the back cover side so I think I should of make a bleed on my cover book design so I could have more space and cut around the original book!

In what ways did I show that I had achieved the Learning Outcomes? How can I improve this next time?

I have come up with straight research for a shorter time but for the next time I would like to improve on my printing measurements. Though I had all right but for the last day to print out my second cover design it went a bit wrong on the printing size book.

What parts of the project did I enjoy most? Why was this the case?

I have enjoy the research and guess I took time in there getting ideas and developing my work.

What parts of the project did I enjoy least? Why was this the case?.

From my printing day I think from my second cover experience I felt a bit disappointed with the size.

At what times did I work best? Why might this be the case? How can I ensure that I work well at al times?

Development my work going through each step and guidance to ensure I have it right.

What areas inspired me? Why was this the case? How could I follow these up?

Coming with lots of ideas on research it followed me to do some initial ideas and to star developing my own work to see the outcome.

What areas were challenging or difficult? Why was this the case?

I think on the measurements even though it came right but guess if I added a bleed to my cover book design I would not have this printing problem.

How can I go about developing and improving the parts I found difficult?

Maybe because we had a short brief I could not show one of my teachers to check the preview print but now I understand that I should always make an extra bleed for my work in case I did not have the right size.

Do I need to develop certain skills? Do I need these now? Or later?

I think I will need to improve on my printing skills.

Project:  Book Covers

Module: Graphic Design with Typography

In this project you will be designing the covers for a book. You will be expected to complete this work in one session, lasting a college day.

You should undertake a complete design process from analysis of the brief, research, ideas generation and development and realisation. However, you will not need to present a large sketchbook. BUT you will be asked to submit your “workings out” in term of research, ideas development and design decision justification, along with final pieces. These need to be mounted during the final session of the day.

You will be told the name of the book on the morning of each session.

The Brief

Design covers for  Penguin-type paperback books.

This should include front cover, spine and back cover.

You will be given the wording and blurbs and any other details, on the day of each session.

These will be standard Penguin paperback size so that you may provide yourself with old paperbacks in order to make mock ups of the books at the end of the session. So you will need to take measurements of your mock-up book and make a cover to fit. You are advised to run a test print to check that the format is correct before you begin to design.

You may use your own or found imagery, BUT remember that this is a typographic module and your grades will mainly be dependent on the ways in which you demonstrate your knowledge and application of type. Grades will focus on how and why you have applied typography.

You should evidence research into (fiction and non-fiction) book jackets in general, examining application of type and imagery, including presentation of blurbs. This may be worked on before the practical book jacket days.

Specific Learning Outcomes

Please refer to the Module Guide on Moodle for specific learning outcomes against which you will be assessed. Please make sure that you allow yourself opportunities to present evidence of having achieved these in your sketchbooks and final pieces.

You will NOT receive a grade for this project yet but will do so when the Graphic Design and Type portfolio is submitted in May. You will have a chance to re-work the book cover if necessary.
