Semiotics – Paradigms & Syntagms

To understand parading and syntagms

Paradigmatic it is a set of signs, those of which that have a common function. It can be seen as a contrastive factor because the signifiers in the same paradigm set shapes each other’s preferred meaning by virtue of mental associations. For example, a set of verbs, nouns, etc.

The syntagmatic is known to be the chain of signifiers, refers to the combination of signifiers taken from a paradigm to form a meaningful order. A few of examples of which are sentences as  paragraph, chapter, print advertisment.

At the two images, the first advert for Marlboro cigarettes, It’s a proud cowboy that looks tuff and a hat demonstrating the “American dream” but if you change it with other clothes and no hat and tuff he would not suit for a cigarettes advert which it would look weird and not suitable.

The second advert it’s a man from the same first advert but it looks creepy because the man looks like he killed the horse but in another way it shows to demonstrate another definition to understand about the advert.

Research (brainstorm) – Semiotics poster

My group and I have come up with the conclusion of drawing a brainstorm so we could come up with ideas choosing a section like  Dave will be doing the Semiotics part, Alan will be looking and getting information about Posters and I will be investigating about Style/Typography of the independent.

Signified, Denotation, Connotation 6 icons – iPhone Apps

Signified – Is a shell  icon and you can notice because its a logo from a petrol station called “shell”

Denotation – It’s a shell formed from the scallop.

Connotation – It’s from the seafood and it comes from the scallop

Signified – Since this logo represents from a ciggar and a cross line angle which indicates that it’s a non smoking area.

Denotation – a cigar graphic, shapes and black and white coloour.

Connotation – It comes from original cigar smoke.

Signified – a cross from the ambulance logo

Signified – the bus stop logo

Signified – it indicates for ladies only (toilet sign)

Signified – it’s a bell sign

This is an example from Ferdinand de Sussure’s who made a logic sign where people could understand the sign is defines as anything that conveys meaning and refers to something other than itself.

According Ferdinand de Sussure’s said that any sign is composed of two parts, the Signifier, and Signified.

Ferdinand de Saussure Model - Signs

Using the technique from Ferdinand de Saussure’s we have come with the idea of concept and sound then to signified and signifier.

For the last image I have done annotation and connotation on the notes above.

For the project we are expected to meet various “learning outcomes” one of these outcomes on the current projects states we must have “Produced and developed an understanding of current digital media concepts and technologies.” We have been put in groups of 3 and asked to take an element each, reporting back to each other in a few days time. Carina is dealing with file sharing such as Youtube and Instagram, Alan is working with social networking looking at sites like Facebook, Linkedin and whilst I am looking at handheld media devices and their uses.

I would like to say from the off that even between all three of us we wont be able to cover all aspects of digital media, we started drawing up a diagram of what it actually consists of and it got huge! Everything is interconnected and growing all the time, I believe that soon we will not carry any portable media we will not own paper documents, it will be based around fingerprints or eye scanners, everything will be on a cloud, computers will be built into buildings and work around us like air. Until then we will have to carry devices around such as smart phones and tablet computers and rely on Wi-Fi connections. I have made a spider-diagram showing how we use our devices, these interlink with the work both Alan and Carina have done.

Handheld devices have grown in both popularity and complexity, when I say complexity they are massively easy to use with well thought out interfaces but can carry out amazing tasks. I think a prime example of this is my Nan, she uses an I-pad to talk to my aunt and uncle in Bermuda, it costs her nothing via Skype and thanks to the inbuilt camera it’s face to face, one of the many uses. You only have to look on a train to see how the business man will skip between checking e-mails and playing Angry Birds whilst listening to his favourite music, upon getting off his train he can check bus routes and times or connecting trains, even load Google maps to direct him to his meeting. Not to mention the fact the alarm woke him this morning and his calendar (which updates itself from his main computer) has let him know his tasks for the day. Smart media links everything together, it allows us to download up to date media, newspapers, e-zines and social media (Twitter etc) but also upload instantly to a variety of media in different formats (written, sound, video and photo’s) and as their popularity grows the whole movement gains momentum with more features becoming available.

I have outlined the direction where I believe technology will go, however to really know you would have to take a look inside a market leaders r&d lab for example Apple or Microsoft but they keep their secrets well hidden!

From are various learning out comes one of them was to understand different sections of digital media. But as there were so many parts of digital medial are lecture thought it would be a good idea if we were in a group of three as this will make it easier. So within this group I was with Dave who looked at Handheld devices such as cameras, iPad and especially Phones like the blackberry and the iPhone, and Carina will look at file sharing for example Youtube and instargram.

As for me I choose to look at Social networking as I wanted to look at how the social side of networking has changed over the years and how it is digital media. Social networking as changed dramatic over the years as many more people join up to sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn,, Skype, Friends reunited and even blogs. A prime example that I mentioned was Facebook as most people these days use it as it is easy to sign up and use which is really handy as you can contact friends or even stay in torch with relatives from great distances. But I also found that with these social networking a lot of business use them to advertise their work and to contact their employe about important deadlines as most people these days are mostly on the move. Another example that I mentioned was blogs as people don’t always use Facebook as  there are many varies other blogs that people us such as WordPress, Tumbler and even google version of blogger. These may have not have the same popularity as the other big social sites but they are still part of the digital media and play an important part in how we choose to contact people.

Digital media – (Group project)

For this project we have been put into 3 groups to analyze about digital media concepts and technologies.

Each of us have come up with ideas and drawn a brainstorm who is going to do so Dave has to do the handle media devices and their uses, Alan will be dealing with social networking like facebook, linkedin and and I will find out about the media sharing as youtube, google, instagram etc.

Digital media on this days is a huge communication and for that people has contribute certain media to attract people to come across of publishing work like adverts, movies, music, news, images, apps, books, sports that are created on a online industry like for example:

Social Media can work for any one who runs a business including a website where businesses get the benefit from social media.

Like youtube is a video sharing website where users can upload, share, comment and view videos and can also be  update or upload a video, anyone following, liking or subscribing to you will see it, a  forms of advertising.

Google it’s a universal site where it lets you find other sites on the web based on keyword searches and searches through blogs, catalogs, videos, news items and more.

Google also provides Internet services that let you create blogs, send email, and publish web pages. Google has social networking tools, organization tools, and chat tools, services for mobile devices.

There is other media called as photo media such as instagram which is an online photo sharing and social networking service where you can also add filters on the photos and add tags to make it popular by getting followers such as “users”.

The difference between flickr , cloud storage and tumblr is that Tumblr is a blogging platform that allows users to post text, images, videos, links, quotes and audio to their tumblelog, a short-form and flickrs is an sharing photo and video hosting as the same as cloud storage but it also allows you to store data online and to access web services from any location. Even social networking sites that can be seen as cloud computing, because they allow you to store and share information online.

Media it is a huge channel where anyone around the world can get connected especially television, is communicating by vision and sound. What a television does is entertains and gets you informed. A Radio is just sound communication and you are visualizing what you are hearing.

What is digital media

Digital media it’s about a text, graphics, audio, and video that can be transmitted over internet, computer networks, tv and radio.

Like advertising on the Internet, which offers advertising options such as search engine marketing display ads, search engine content ads, social marketing and email marketing.

Another type digital media advertising is with the use of phone, for text message ads or mobile marketing.

Social media is another form of digital media advertising. As social media networks or businesses can use the update and sharing features on social media networks to help promote their products and services.

Businesses can even get their users and followers to help them promote the business and spread the word turning word-of-mouth advertising into digital media advertising.

With more and more consumers carrying and using phones, especially smartphones, business are also turning to phone marketing as a form of digital media advertising. This type of advertising sends text messages as advertisements and promotions to the person’s phone.

iPhone Apps Brief

Project:  iPhone Apps

Module: Design for Digital Media 15 credits

Date Set: 1st March 2013

Submission:  Friday March 22nd 2013

Non verbal communication in the form of pictograms, ideograms and symbols has been with us for thousands of years, and even our modern Latin alphabet is little more than symbols that have evolved over the past several thousand years. Today signage is designed with immediacy in mind, the message or instruction has to be communicated with speed: eg. consider motorway signage.

The focus of this project is upon non-verbal communication, although you are permitted to use some typography where appropriate.

Graphic design is mostly about sending the right message to the right group of people, usually to persuade, educate and inform. The latter of these is what this project is concerned with.

As well developing your computer skills, this project will help you develop your ability to make concrete complex abstract concepts and reduce them to their simplest visual forms whilst retaining meaning.

The Brief

You are to research and design seven icons for Apps for the iPhone.  Present  planning and development for each icon in your sketchbook.

A digital company has produced seven Apps in a series. Each icon should demonstrate the concept of the theme but the icons should also show by their design that they are part of a series.

The seven Apps are all measuring devices:

  • Speedometer
  • Pedometer
  • Decibel metre
  • Barometer
  • Thermometer
  • Anemometer
  • Altimeter

You should use the correct measurements and carefully consider the very small scale of the Apps’ icons. You should also show in your sketchbook the navigation or usability of your App but the App does not need to actually function.

As well as producing seven icons for Apps you should also provide in your sketchbook a competent navigation /usability plan and some thumbnails for the actual pages of one of the above Apps. You do not need to produce final designs for these but your sketchbook work must demonstrate the elements of interactivity within an App.

Learning Outcomes

The specific Learning Outcomes for the module, against which you will be assesses are listed on Moodle and in the Course Handbook. You are strongly advised to make yourself familiar with these and to ensure that throughout your work you are providing evidence of how you have achieved these. Labelling the evidence for each outcome in your sketchbook is highly advised.

You will have to research, amongst other things, non-verbal communication, ideograms, pictograms and icon design.
