Photography magazine layout designs examples

05: Modern Design Magazine issue 13, July 2008
A minimalist cover design could look very modern and sleek if you have the right photograph to use as in the example below. Photo collage on a spread can break the monotony as shown below.

cover and inside layout of Modern Magazine

11: Change in the Feather
Another good example of a spread layout, with one side featuring one big interesting photo and the other side containing the text.

17: Between the ducks…
This spread does not have continuity, which is consistent with the theme of the article.  The “oddness” makes people wonder and thus makes it interesting enough to make them read through.

Minimal Magazine Layout by : Rolando Bouza

Here it the best layouts that has inspired me in a way

These photography magazine page examples are really inspired because it shows a different combination of layouts in different views and composition along with the heading and the body text or just only using photographs with a small text on the bottom.

Like the first image “05: Modern Design Magazine issue 13, July 2008” I love the layout and specially how the photographs are located side by side making as a landscape even though this images are for architecture but I would like to have something like this for my final.

The typography on image – page “11: Change in the Feather” and “17: Between the ducks…” are using big and loud font to get the attraction and understanding from the photograph that also does match with the colour photo.

General environmental photography work examples

Here are couple of a general environmental photography that has catch my eye and gives me the inspiration to do it.

This is a photograph from a Cliff Lake in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness Area, Kootenai National Forest, northwest Montana.

It looks that from a photograph was illustrated to make it lighter and softness with a fragile lake

From this nature landscape I like the shadow and the light of this image that gives a bright photo that makes you see every detail.

This photograph really attracts me because it’s a red squirrel on cone cache in old-growth forest at Kootenai National Forest, northwest Montana.

I like the composition of this photograph where it does show a blur background with the main image standing out from the background giving a clear detail.

I know this image can a simple one but it gives you the wonder and obvious because it’s to explore the nature.

This is a black and white photograph about the war environment where it shows a detailed of Argentine soldiers walking and carrying big supplies on their shoulders.

We all know  environment has different areas but this image has showed a communication environment where it means meadia communication which now telephone is used more than everyday which give us the ability to connect us with other people.

I like how this design it’s settled and how its compose with the typography by giving the body information along the side the telephone image and including the space for each side.

About general environment

Environment it’s the influences and resources in a system which means environment is our surroundings and what is around us for example our house, town, shops, parks, river, ocean  etc.

This is a piece of art by Widesmith of a nature artist, who enjoys nature landscapes.

Most of his paintings are nature environmental where he started to draw plants and flowers but then he became more enthusiastic with the beauty of nature.

Editorial Design brief

Project:  Editorial Design

Module: Graphic Design Computer Applications 1B

In this project you are to consider editorial design, looking especially at the combinations of image and typography. You are to spend time looking at grids and how they are used to underpin the layout of pages for magazines and books.

You are to take a series of your photographs that fit the topic Environment.

How you choose to interpret this word is up to you. It may be that you make a series of images specifically about a particular environment or space, such as a room or home; or it may be about The Environment, including weather or issues of ecology.

You should present in your sketch book at least 20 photographs.

The Brief

1) You are to design layouts for two double page spreads for a fictional magazine called, Photography Now. The layouts should showcase your own photography on the Environment topic. How many images you use in your spreads is up to you. The format of these pages is  200mm x 200mm per single page. You may design in any creative style that you wish, based on your research findings (which you must evidence). You must use only Quark or InDesign only for layout.

2) You will need to have created a body of research and planning for your photos. You must show links between this and your editorial layout. You will need to have a body of photography work completed fairly quickly. You may use stock photos while planning your dummy layouts; but your final must contain your own imagery.

3) You will need to have created a body of research in which you explore exemplars of editorial design. You should try to make analysis, using overlays, of the underlying grid structure of some of these. You should also comment on styles used. You must evidence links between this and your layout.

4) You must also write and layout within your spreads, a piece of text of between 200 and 400 words. This will be a personal justification of how you approached your photography. You should consider and use appropriate application of typography to set this text.

Specific Learning Outcomes

Please refer to the Module Guide on Moodle for specific learning outcomes against which you will be assessed. Please make sure that you allow yourself opportunities to present evidence of having achieved these in your sketchbooks and final pieces.

Research is a key component of this module. The research you should present must include preparatory studies for your photographs; research on layout styles and techniques, including grids; specific research into the magazine you are designing for.

Critic about my final Subculture project

From my critic I have been told that the front cover has been used with the right colours as I used black, red and white colours to expand about Punk people.

I did have some error on changing

Evaluation and reflection

Evaluation and Reflection:

1) Visual Communication:

In what ways does the visual communication/message of the piece meet the needs of the brief?
I tried to give the visual communication by showing a right image for the front cover magazine where it does seems to attract to the audience which it’s about Punk with a striking and rough image.

In what ways does the visual communication/message of the piece fail to meet the needs of the brief?
Well not giving the right information and image to the audience to understand what it’s talking about.
What are the strengths of the visual communication? Why?
Using an appropriate image and language to interact with the audience and make it understandable so people won’t get confuse like for example on my front cover design it’s used a drawing “side portrait” with a nohak hair look from punks.

What are the weaknesses of the visual communication? Why?
Not demonstrating a direct communication to the audience and that might fail the image of a visual communication.

In what practical ways could the piece be developed or improved?
Well I did some Internet, magazine and book research and it gave me a lot of information from what I was looking for so then I became to analize and came with the idea of developing ideas to decide which one of them I will choose for my final design.

2) Reflection of own working practices:

Be very honest with yourself in this section. Please feel free to approach a member of staff for help finding ways to develop skills.
How was my time keeping?
My time was a bit stressful because I found a lot of information and was getting confuse myself in which area to start but I guess I did a good job at the end of the design.

How was my analysis of the brief?
Analysising my research has showed me a variety of ideas and for then I came with the idea of using my own drawing to give a right visual communication.

How did I use research to generate and develop ideas?
Having enough to research to get ideas and influences by other people so I can come up with my own ideas.

How did I use experimentation during the project? How can I make this more effective?
Experimenting the chosen drawing on photoshop and illustrator to come out with new styles and colours.

In what ways did I show that I had achieved the Learning Outcomes? How can I improve this next time?
Maybe If I used a natural pain on top as I used a spray plain on top of portrait side layer and add more material on it.
What parts of the project did I enjoy most? Why was this the case?
To generate ideas and start designing because I like to demonstrate a different experimentation on the program.

What parts of the project did I enjoy least? Why was this the case?

Like I said before research has confused me a bit because apart of having a lot of research has made me view a lot of different ideas and didn’t know how to start.

At what times did I work best? Why might this be the case? How can I ensure that I work well at al times?

Starting to design my final design and to analyze different experiments which I enjoy more doing straight to the point.

What areas inspired me? Why was this the case? How could I follow these up?

Some of the 70s magazine covers and illustrations from punk has inspired me on a way I did on my front cover design because I know it could been difficult back in the days but I tried to use a similiar idea and to produce it as a striking image.

What areas were challenging or difficult?  Why was this the case?

To make sure that the guide lines and columns where right in order to add the body text on the inside cover information.

h i

For my final design I end up using my side portrait drawing because I wanted to experiment in a way how Punk use to have it as rough.
So my next step was to scan it to Illustrator and crop the sides that it won’t be used.
Then I transferred to Photoshop and gave a white tone colour to the side portrait (face) and made a double layer to have it as black side portrait (face).
Having those two colours I add a small of sprayed on top to make it as art rough punk.
I decided to play around and think about the colours that I will be using for the background so for then I chose pink with the double side face facing to the left side cover.
Then I created a new page in Indesign and I have added to it.
So as you can see I have changed the colour of “Creative Review” in black because I though that it will stand out with the own image on it.
I started to design the layout on the left side page putting down the information while a used a paragraph on the first line where it’s says “Back in the days” you can see that I made the letter “B”  a bold high letter to expand the information.
Using an image in the middle of the body text adding a text wrap where the image can be settle in a space while the body text follows around the image.
So for then I decided to add more images to the right side page to show a bit of information on it using the right layout and space.
Since I been experiment with the image from the front cover I had an advice from my teacher Tim that I should try to use the face the other way around so it’s not facing towards the back o f the mag so I think he was right and i decided to change it and it looks better and obvious because it’s on a right direction to open a page.

Overall I think I did a good design because I have used my own technique giving an striking image from my own drawing to show an expression how Punk use to have red, black and white colours in fashion as in art but because their magazine covers where only drawings, collages, stamps, sprayed, cut and pasted from magazines to create a scene and the colors are often two tone and deeply contrasting.

From my research I learn that Punk was not only a rock band it was more than that and that society couldn’t hide from it and advertisement like flayers, magazines, posters was all over the place back in eighteens.

I used black, red and white on the whole design because I think it was the right colours to choose combining with the black and white images that I took it from my research plus adding the “author” below the body text on the left side page.

Final scrip design references

For my final design scrip I researched on this websites to come up with the right information and images to add on my “magazine design” means that photos attached on my inside cover design are not my photos.

Creative Review magazine examples

I bough one of the creative review magazines and it’s seems to give u a lot of information about any particular of design and whats going on about art. It also shows you the layout how its form and created in each column giving a space and a short descriptions on images as references.

On the first image it’s the front cover from the Creative Review and it shows as the brand of the magazine by giving also detail of when was issued and what the magazine it’s going to talk about.

In every Creative Review front cover image it’s always in the middle of the cover or sometimes there is a image hidden the Creative Review name  as you can see on the last image that I took it from the main creative review website by showing a list of front covers in different concepts.

The second picture it’s an example of adding more images than a body text and if you can notice it has a structure where everything it’s on its place and giving the space of each image with the reference under the image.

On the third picture you can see that the heading it’s not always at the top of an image it can be placed under an image by giving a bold font heading to stand out the article.

I have notice that columns can be alone with no lines correcting or seems like a separation column but in creative review there is always a line of separation in each column means to not confuse people reading all together so it can be notice that is separate information.

Fourth image it has a huge view including the image means that there is more body text than the other page and what I like about this page it’s that space is giving in the middle of the body text with a black bold font to introduce the article. Here is a difference than other body text meaning using the first letter of a writing like as you see on the letter “L” with a orange square.

Fifth and sixth picture are a continue page and I love the fact that the information are in both sides of the image giving a space to the sides using the same orange square box in the letter “I”.

For the last image seems to be use a larger font creating a big space with small information images which gives an easy way to understand and visualize.

I have snapshot this image from the Creative Review website to show a variety of front covers where it shows that “Creative Review” can be changed the colour font but not the actual font. It also gives the attention that it’s not only using an art, photograph, or a thing, means that can be produced in a variety of things.

Book – Making and braking a grid for a magazine cover and inside cover

These are some examples that I would like to work on for my front cover and inside cover design.

There is different styles of magazines layouts having space and columns between the image and the script which gives an spread information and the easy way to read.
